#94199 - 06/22/18 11:32 PM Distributor weights for Atlas engine

I've got an atlas engine electronic distributor in my 250. It tricks people into thinking I still have the original points distributor. Fun. I would like to push the advance curve harder at lower rpm. I'm having a hard time finding weights for it. Suggestions?

FYI for moved into the new place, awesome shop! I'll have to include a picture once I figure out where to post them again.

Like to hear more about your new shop. Everyone deserves a bigger, better one.

Not sure what a Atlas Engine Distributor is.Usually it only involves different springs.

Ahhh, I should say the vortec4200 inline six cylinder that was in newer Chevy vehicles.

I got a set of springs of different strengths from summit, but even the heaviest was too light. Somebody told me they changed the weights. Leads on springs would be good to.

Let's try sharing some pictures! It doesn't look like it's going to work, you'll need to copy and paste into a browser to see them if they don't come through.

There's an extra 2 car garage and a good size shop along with it. I had them vapor sealed and coated.

I guess I'm a little confused about the distributor you're using. As I understand it, the Atlas Vortec 4200 is a coil on plug ignition system and doesn't have a distributor.

Are you using a Vortec 4.3 V6 distributor?

I bought it from Tom Langdon, thought he said it was from the inline 6, but mauve is the v6. Seems I just need to give Tom a call, eh?

The Atlas engines don't have distributors, so you must have misunderstood what you were buying. They are like the LS engines and have an internal reluctor wheel that triggers the ignition firing and has a coil on plug ignition system which is the new systems most all modern engines use these days.

Hi CNN-Dude,

I talked to Tom last week. He said the distributor was from a 1985 Chevy pickup. I assumed incorrectly that it was an atlas vortec. Any idea?

Thanks,
Mark

Sorry, I no longer come here and didn't see you responded. The term "Vortech" has been used by GM for over 20 years now, and was applied to various engines including most of the later V8's from the 350's to 454's and even the 4.3 liter V6's. I think back a few years ago Tom Langdon was modifying HEI distributors from the V6 engines to work in these inline engines. And its possible the springs and weight kits from those later engines is all that are still available from GM as the early components for the original 250's and such may be long discontinued. Mr. Gasket still makes their spring kits though, and whether the "Vortech" parts you purchased offer any advantage or benefit over these aftermarket parts is hard to say. It may be the fact that's all that is available from GM and nothing more.
