Making the trek to Austria's annual Wörthersee festival is somewhat of a righteous pilgrimage for the Volkswagen faithful. Here, personal pizza-sized honeycomb BBS wheels are worshiped. People know the difference in tartan seat patterns between Mk1 and Mk2 Sciroccos. And, sometimes, a group of design apprentices show up driving a one-off hatchback concept with 375 hp at its snout.

This is the Volkswagen Golf GTI Wolfsburg Edition concept, and it does right by the classic performance nameplate.

Mainly, we're just really into this engine. It's a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-pot, delivering the aforementioned 375 ponies. (We're hoping it's something derived from one of VW's competition rally cars). Either way, it puts the Wolfsburg Edition some 85 hp up on the Golf R and represents a massive 165-hp leap over the base GTI. Running through a seven-speed DSG 'box, it's safe to assume this thing isn't too far off the R400's straight-line performance.

Of course, the Wolfsburg Edition is a show car. That means it's got special wheels, big brakes, a unique paint job, and inlaid graphics of the city's skyline. We dig the custom spoilers front and rear, and the bespoke plaid-trimmed Recaro seats are a nice touch.

It's worth mentioning that the design team is comprised entirely of 18- to 23-year-olds. Perhaps there's hope for the Millennial car enthusiast yet.
